As I Recall, I Think We Both Kind of Liked It…

If you’ve been reading for very long or know me at all, you know it’s not like me to skip a meal. Except for breakfast. I can do without it most days. I know, I know, it’s the most important meal of the day. Yada yada yada. I don’t love eggs and bacon and grits (shameful, I know!) And I’m not too keen on pastries (gasp!) Much to my husband’s dismay, I just can’t stomach Waffle House. Yuck.
But there is one place in the Jackson area that makes me love a big hearty breakfast – Primos Cafe. The Primos family has been a dining institution in Mississippi since 1929 when Primos Bakery opened up in downtown Jackson by owners Angelo “Pop” and Mildred Primos.
Pop Primos and the Bake Shop Delivery Truck. Found here.
In the next few years, Primos took on many lives – from a sandwich shop to a full service restaurant. Pop and Mildred’s restaurant moved all around downtown to fully accommodate a growing demand and changing times. In 1964, the Primos opened Northgate, a fine dining restaurant with private dining rooms and a deli and bakery.
Now, the Primos family has two cafe locations in the Jackson area and they serve one mean breakfast. Like I said, I don’t love breakfast, but I love Primos breakfast. I keep saying once we move (closer in proximity to the restaurant), it’s becoming our Saturday morning ritual. I love the story of a longstanding family-run restaurant – not to mention their food. They have dubbed it “Southern food for city folks.”
We ventured to Primos this past weekend to meet a friend for breakfast and they had blueberry pancakes. Oh my. I ordered the breakfast wrap, which is great in its own right, but those pancakes stole the show. Oh, and by the way, our table shared them- I was hungry, but not quite hungry enough to order two entrees for myself! (Shocker!)
All that to entice you to duck into Primos. So good. I could go on and on about their baked goods too – strawberry cake and petit fours in particular – but that, my dears, is another story for another day.
I said, how ’bout breakfast at Primos?
